For 70 years, thousands of St. Joseph residents
spent their days in the tan two-story brick building near the Lake Michigan shore at 2214 S. State St.
There, they learned to read and write, how to make new friends, the proper way to kick a soccer ball and countless other life lessons.
The last set of children to make memories like these at Jefferson School are now young adults, but thanks to a development project that brought the building back to life, the memories made there won’t end with dodgeball and arithmetic.
A team of architects, designers, developers and investors have been hard at work transforming the former school into luxury-style loft apartments since the summer of 2015.
By the end of this year, the two buildings that once made up the elementary school near the beach will contain a total of 22 lofts, many of which have already been leased.
